While many buyers focus on what they can see, hidden issues in the sewer line can lead to costly repairs. When paired with a thorough home inspection, a sewer line inspection gives you the information you need to make a confident, well-informed purchasing decision.
Is a sewer Scope right for me?
Since a home’s sewer line is buried underground, its condition can’t be determined during a typical home walkthrough, which is why this inspection is so important. Fixtures that seem to work properly don’t always indicate a healthy sewer line, and hidden issues can exist without obvious warning signs. A sewer scope inspection offers a clear view of the line’s condition and helps identify problems before they become costly repairs.
At 5D Home Inspectors, sewer scope inspections are part of our comprehensive approach to home evaluations. This service can uncover current issues or potential concerns that should be addressed prior to closing on a home. Our inspection:
We also verify whether those materials comply with current local building standards, giving you the knowledge you need to make a confident, informed decision.
How is a sewer scope inspection performed?
A sewer scope inspection for a single-family home will take about an hour from start to finish.
During the process, a specialist threads a compact video camera into the sewer line, known as the lateral, through the cleanout access. The cleanout is typically found near where the sewer line exits the house—often in the basement, but it may also be located in a crawlspace or outside. The camera travels from the cleanout through the lateral until it reaches the main municipal sewer connection near the street.
If the line is clear and intact, no further action is needed. If defects, blockages, or damage are detected, the camera can pinpoint the precise location of the problem.
After the inspection, your 5D inspector will deliver a comprehensive summary of the findings along with any recommended corrective steps.

A home’s age can play an important role in determining the need for a sewer scope inspection. Many older homes were built with concrete or clay sewer lines, materials that are especially vulnerable to cracking, deterioration, and intrusion from tree roots. The presence of large or mature trees on a property can further increase the likelihood of existing or past sewer-related issues.
